M2M NEXG H721 V6 Dual Modem 5G Ready Cellular Gigabit Router

NOTE: This listing for the M2M NEXG H721 V6 Router, the newest version available. Bare Router Only, with power supply.


The M2M NEXG H721 V6 versatility and design should accommodate both M.2 and Mini PCI-E modems as well as compatible Mini PCI-E WiFi cards.  The router comes preinstalled with the GoldenOrb version of OpenWRT.

The H721 is equipped with two SIM Card trays, one M.2 modem slot and three Mini PCI-E slots, all of which can be configured to meet a diverse spectrum of applications and requirements. 

The Mini PCI-E WiFi Card is a welcome addition for obtaining a stable and dependable WiFi connection.

NOTICE: The H721 is sold as a bare-bone router (i.e., the assembly router cases and PCB only).  A customer may purchase only the components required or desired for a particular build and configuration.  This provides the option of upgrading a preexisting cellular router while utilizing its modem, pigtail cables, antennas and power supply in order to mitigate costs.

We have had issues in the past and are guarded against this. Though we will admit we have not seen a recurrence of this issue from the V5 version and beyond. It is possibly a problem that is passed.


NOTE: 
It is strongly recommended to invest in a quality power strip surge protector (i.e., APC, Belkin,…) to use with the M2M (as well as other expensive electronic equipment).  This will help protect against Transients (momentary spikes/surges in voltage or current) that can be detrimental to expensive equipment.  Transient damage to the M2M and/or its modem is not covered under warranty.  Protect your equipment.

CELLULAR MODEM CONFIGURATION:

The H721 will support the following modem configurations:

  • 1 x Mini PCI-E Modem
  • 1 x M.2 (USB2.0 or USB3.0) Modem
  • 1 x Mini PCI-E Modem and 1 x M.2 (USB2.0 or USB3.0) Modem

NOTE: The previous versions of the H721 with GoldenOrb could not be configured for dual modems if “one” of the modems is a Quectel.  In other words, a Quectel modem cannot be used with another modem, regardless of its make or model, due to a driver conflict. LTE FIX has not tested this with the H721 V5 or beyond.

 

NOTICE ON USING MINI PCI-E MODEMS:

A Mini PCI-E modem (i.e., Sierra Wireless MC7455, Telit LM940/LM960) will share the same Mini PCI-E interface socket (and pin lanes) on the that must also accommodates a Mini PCI-E WiFi card operating in USB2.0.   As such, a Mini PCI-E modem that occupies this socket must also be configured to operate in USB2.0.

WIFI OVERVIEW

The H721 allows 2 x Mini PCI-E WiFi Cards.

The H721 version of GoldenOrb firmware is preloaded with 9K and 10K WiFi drivers, supporting the vast majority of Qualcomm AR and QCA series Mini PCI-E WiFi cards (Bluetooth is not supported). 

WiFi Cards that are known to be supported include (but are not limited to):

  • AR9280
  • AR9287
  • AR9382
  • QCA9880
  • QCA9882

We will be updating our list based on user feedback. 

While the WiFi Cards are dual band, each card may only operate in either the 2.4GHz “or” 5GHz mode.  Concurrent 2.4/5GHz requires installing two WiFi Cards–which will occupy both Mini PCI-E slots and leave no room for a Mini PCI-E modem.

These WiFi Cards have U.FL Antenna connector ports. 

NOTE:  When the H721 is booted for the first time:  Dual-Band N WiFi cards are set to 2.4GHz, while Dual-Band AC cards is set to 5GHz.

PREVIOUS MODEL TEST BUILD

LTE FIX built and tested the H721 using the Sierra Wireless EM7565 (CAT12) modem and the Compex QCA9880 WLE900VX  (1300Mbps) dual-band WiFi Card (see the listing photo). 

This configuration makes for a great build with a seemingly stable and fast 5GHz WiFi–something other cellular routers seem to lack.  H721 is a pretty sleek little router. 

We would recommend using the smaller 1.13 pigtail cables as the RG178 cabling makes it difficult to install and position the U.FL connectors on the WiFi card.

We did not test the dual modem configuration, although we were tempted to test with dual EM7565 modems.  Plenty of choices for antenna mounting locations on the front and rear of router case.

 

 

Pictured below is a dual M.2 modem (EM7455 and EM7355) build with dual Mini PCI-E WiFi cards.

    To date, this is my favorite router shell (I had the V5 version), reason why….

    12 antenna ports! And all of them are on attached to the chassis for safe lid removal! That means it can handle (2) 4xMIMO with GPS ports if need be. Super clean layout on the interior.

    Like the oth3er LTEFix router I was using (NEXR5GO), its built like a tank, all metal construction, plenty of room to work with inside. It also came with a mounting kit which is nice, along with plugs for the unused antenna ports.

    I paired this unit with a 2.5A power adapter, and the Quectel mentioned earlier. I have been running this as my main router since December 2020, 24/7 and have not had a single issue. No modem burn out, no real issues what so ever.
